Article: Birth Plan from a 3rd time Mom

Birth Plan from a 3rd time Mom

Overview

I don’t believe in having a rigid birth plan. Instead, I prefer to go in with a clear idea of what I'd like while staying open to how my journey unfolds. Birth is unpredictable, and sticking to a strict plan can sometimes create unnecessary stress or anxiety.

Previous Birth Experiences

Baby #1:
I was firm on not getting an epidural, though I did receive Pitocin to help labor progress. For pain management, I used a nitrous oxide mask—an option I hadn’t even considered until it was offered to me. I’m not sure how much it helped, but it's good to know it's available.

After laboring naturally for so long, I was completely exhausted after delivery. I could barely lift my arms and just wanted to sleep, which made it difficult to be fully present in the moment.

Baby #2:
This time, I went in open to the idea of an epidural. I requested a small dose so I could still feel my legs and the pushing phase. It was the perfect balance for me. I got the epidural, took a nap, and when I woke up—boom—it was time to push. I pushed him out in two minutes. I felt rested, relaxed, and fully present for the experience.

Baby #3:
For this birth, I’m keeping an open mind. I may go without the epidural, but I’m also open to getting it depending on how labor progresses.

Labor & Delivery Room Preferences

Sounds:
I’ve tried different approaches—hype music, hypnobirthing mantras, and prayers. This time, I plan to use a 528 Hz frequency playlist, known for its ability to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance feelings of love and self-acceptance.

Lights:
I prefer dim lighting and plan to bring a red light panel. Red, orange, and amber tones are the most calming and supportive of a peaceful birth environment.

Baby Care Preferences

While I’m flexible about my own experience, my newborn care choices are non-negotiable.

  • For my boys: I declined everything except oral Vitamin K drops.
  • For my girl: I will not be giving her ANYTHING, including no Vitamin K drops.
  • For all my babies: No vaccines, no eye ointment, no unnecessary interventions. I want them to be handled as little as possible. I also decline the first bath. I brought my own cloth diapers because I don't want polyester on their skin upon birth. Ill bring Kudos to the hospital for baby #3

Preserving the Vernix:
At birth, many doctors and nurses instinctively wipe the baby down from head to toe. I request that my baby’s vernix NOT be wiped off. Instead, I want immediate skin-to-skin contact, with the baby placed directly on my chest.

What is Vernix?

Vernix is the white, creamy coating on a newborn’s skin. It’s a protective, nutrient-rich substance made up of:
✔ 80% water
✔ 10% protein
✔ 10% lipids (including ceramides, free fatty acids, phospholipids, and cholesterol)

The Benefits of Vernix:

  • Lubricates the birth canal for a smoother delivery
  • Prevents water loss in the newborn’s delicate skin
  • Regulates body temperature post-birth
  • Acts as a natural antimicrobial against bacteria and fungi
  • Provides antioxidant properties
  • Moisturizes and supports wound healing
  • Functions as a lung surfactant (potentially reducing the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis)

When left on the skin, vernix naturally absorbs within minutes, offering its full protective benefits. No wiping necessary.

My biggest advice is don't stress too much. Giving birth is actually not as scary as everyone makes it sound. It's exciting, beautiful, rewarding, and such an incredible experience. Be in the moment and don't focus too much on "the plan".
