The Backstory

A kids’ soap company recently reached out to us promoting its products as a clean option for children and they wanted to send me some products. We reviewed the ingredients and saw isobutane, propane and butane, along with synthetic dyes in certain formulas.

So obviously it was a hard pass. But this isn't an isolated incident. Many products, not limited to babies and kids, will say "clean", "natural", "organic", "made without harsh chemicals"

But we care less about what a product “made without” and more about what it IS made with.

“Clean,” “natural” and “organic” on the front of a bottle aren't enough. And if we can't easily find a complete ingredient list, not just “key ingredients”, we move on.

Our Standard for Kids’ Soap

For baby and kids’ personal care, we look for:

  • Complete ingredient transparency

  • Simple, gentle formulas

  • No unnecessary synthetic dyes

  • No unnecessary aerosol propellants

  • Transparent fragrance ingredients (if it contains "fragrance" we dive into what its made out of and if its naturally derived)

  • Thoughtful sourcing and manufacturing

  • Brands and founders we trust

We also generally avoid lavender in children's products due to concerns raised in research around potential hormonal activity.

And for sensitive, irritated or eczema-prone skin, we choose unscented even when the fragrance is naturally derived.

Lorissa’s Favorite

Pipette Fragrance Free Baby Shampoo + Wash

This is my personal favorite and what I use most on my kids. Of all the cleaner washes I've tried, Pipette works the best on their hair, which makes it an easy head-to-toe option and the bottle I reach for most.

Formulas can change. Our recommendations are based on the formulations reviewed at the time of publication. For persistent skin conditions or allergies, consult your child's healthcare provider.
