How to Combat Morning Sickness
Morning sickness is one of those things that everyone talks about, but until you've lived through it, it's hard to understand just how debilitating it can be.
I had significant morning sickness with all three of my pregnancies. It wasn't just in the morning, and it wasn't just a little nausea. It affected my energy, my ability to eat, and honestly, my ability to enjoy those early weeks of pregnancy.
Interestingly, each pregnancy got progressively easier. Not because I was lucky, but because I had more knowledge.
By the time I became pregnant with my third baby, I had spent years learning about nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine, holistic pregnancy support, and the importance of preparing the body before conception. Looking back, if I were ever fortunate enough to have a baby number four, here's exactly what I would do:
A more tactical approach:
I Would Start Before Pregnancy
In my opinion, supporting your body shouldn't begin after you see two pink lines.
If I were trying to conceive again, I would take a proactive approach by focusing on building health before pregnancy.
That would include:
- Prioritizing nutrient-dense, whole foods for both Michael and me while trying to conceive.
- Regular acupuncture treatments for BOTH of us to support overall health and fertility.
- Supporting liver function with appropriate nutrition and herbal support under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Pregnancy creates a dramatic increase in hormones, and I believe helping the body prepare beforehand can make a meaningful difference. (We'll save the deeper conversation about liver support for another Ledger article.)
If You're Already Pregnant and Experiencing Morning Sickness
First, I feel you. I have been there. Morning sickness can be incredibly isolating, and while there isn't one magic solution, there are several things that made a noticeable difference for me. Try out a few or all of these, and figure out your own rhythm and what works for relief.
1. Acupuncture
If I could recommend one thing, this would probably be it.
Acupuncture was one of the most helpful tools during my pregnancies. It supports the nervous system, digestion, stress response, and overall balance in the body. Many women also report improvements in nausea and vomiting with acupuncture during pregnancy.
You can find many of my trusted acupuncture providers inside The List.
2. Increase Protein Intake
This sounds simple, but it's often one of the hardest things to do when you're nauseated.
Low protein intake and blood sugar swings can sometimes make nausea feel even worse. I always tried to find small ways to increase protein throughout the day, even if it meant eating tiny amounts more frequently instead of large meals.
Don't strive for perfection. Just do the best you can. I love Nunona Bites for this because they are small and easy to eat and very nutrient dense. You can check out NunonaLife.com and use code LORISSA for a discount.
3. Chiropractic Care
Pregnancy changes posture, breathing mechanics, muscle tension, and the way the body moves. Gentle chiropractic care from a provider experienced in prenatal care helped me feel more comfortable throughout pregnancy and supported my overall well-being.
You can find trusted, Lorissa's List-approved chiropractors across all 50 states inside The List.

While every woman's experience is unique, I encourage you to try these remedies that have worked wonders for me:
-
Hydration, the obvious. But not all hydration is created equal. After much research this electrolyte mix has the best balance of minerals and nutrients, its flavorless so you can mix it in anything, and it also has no fillers, sugars, binders or preservatives. Find it HERE.
I also found these mineral vials to be extremely helpful especially when taken early in the morning on an empty stomach. Get them HERE
-
Phosphood - I can confirm that it makes a big difference in morning sickness. It comes in dropper form and has a lemony taste, making it easy to get down in water, or even masked in other flavored drinks. This also helps a lot with heart burn, which is a big contributor to morning sickness due to increased, or off balance stomach acid especially in first trimester. Find it HERE
-
Topical Glutathione - Glutathione is a natural antioxidant in the body that helps fight off toxins and supports the body's detoxification processes, which improves overall well-being during pregnancy. Find it HERE
-
P5P - P5P is the bioactive form of Vitamin B6, and I find it particularly effective for reducing nausea. This is the preferred version of B6 as it is readily usable by the body without needing conversion in the liver, potentially offering more efficient absorption and effectiveness. In studies done, the majority of mothers with severe morning sickness were also severely deficient in P5P and most reported that a morning dose helped. FInd it HERE
-
Boiron USA Nausea Calm - This homeopathic remedy is a lifesaver for settling my stomach, especially when I’m on the go. The natural blend helps ease queasiness without making me feel drowsy, which is such a plus! Find it HERE
-
Regenerzyme heart - If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I rave about Regenerzyme Heart. It’s packed with vitamins, folate, magnesium, and more, and I often take it in place of a prenatal. It supports overall vitality during pregnancy and is a key part of my wellness routine.
-
Beef Organs Stack - This stack is a powerhouse for delivering tailored nutrition to both mom and baby. It supports neural growth, optimal hormone balance, and helps maintain iron stores, which is crucial for oxygen delivery and overall energy. It’s a game changer for both my health and my baby’s development. My favorites HERE
-
Scuttelaria:
Scutellaria has become one of my favorite herbs because of its broad supportive properties.
I personally appreciate it because it supports glutathione production, promotes restful sleep, supports the lymphatic system, helps calm the nervous system, and has antihistamine properties that may provide additional whole-body support.
You can find it HERE
-
Digestive Enzymes:
Taking digestive enzymes with meals helped support my digestion when everything felt sluggish and difficult. The decrease in stomach acid during early pregnancy can lead to the nausea and heart burn. My favorite is HERE
- If all else fails, then I have found this bracelet to help tremendously. It is pricey but depending on the severity of your morning sickness and ability to keep things down, this can be a game changer. Find it HERE
These remedies have truly helped me manage morning sickness, and I hope they bring you some relief, too!
Remember, always consult with your healthcare provider before trying new supplements, especially during pregnancy. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice, this is just what has helped me through my three pregnancies.
